noob [noob]
noun Slang: Usually Disparaging .
a newbie, especially a person who is new to an online community and whose online participation and interactions displaya lack of skill or knowledge
Discrimination has been present in society since the dawn of time. Ever since man became sentient, there has been this very humane concept of "being better than another". Be it in the very smallest of matters like "my sports team is better than yours" to the popcorn inducing "Your religion sucks because of XXXX!!!". Discrimination has divided people, shed blood more than any other, disallowed women to do anything for centuries, caused feuds and wars, everything and anything is because of discrimination. Be it by your religion, your color, or simply even your belief, there will always be another person who will look down upon you, think you are wrong, and to put it simply, think that he will ALWAYS be better than you.
I won't delve any deeper into the various forms of discrimination, it's just too broad and too tedious to cover. Discrimination in gaming, now that's one topic i want to go in. One being i am a gamer, and two, like the real world, all forms of discrimination are rampant in any online game (or a game that needs more than 2 players for that matter) that it's not even funny. The anonymity that one gains from the internet is so powerful that you can flame
FLAME [fleym]
- To insult someone electronically, or otherwise. Sometimes to be a group insult.
anybody, even of importance, and get away unscathed with your ego bloated. It happens vehemently in social media, ever since public chatrooms were created, flame wars have started, just because Person A thinks that Mayonnaise sucks and Person B thinks otherwise. Insert in competition that games provide to it's users with the anonymity that the internet provides, and you have one perfect combination for all out wars. The worse part about this is, it isn't uncommon for these internet flame fests to spill over the real world.
It's become all too common in the news (especially if the internet itself is your source of news), were Gamer X was stabbed by Gamer Group Y because he managed to "accidentally" (let's face it, accidents NEVER happen in the internet, heh) loot an item that belonged to said group. Gaming communities loathe these events, but when a new game comes out that opposes their beloved game, get your flame resistant gear ready and dive right in. You see it in youtube videos, in internet forums, social media, hell, you'll even see it edited in wikipedia every now and then. Why all the hate? Why all the disdain for something that arguably, would allow the gaming community itself to grow? Are the gaming companies at fault? Are the gamers themselves at fault? I understand that it is normal to not accept and agree to something that is either foreign or new, but to be all up in arms about it, and sadly sometimes even violent on said things that it's detrimental.
It's known that some gaming communities are downright vicious, especially to newer players, newbies (n00bs, noobs, n0bs, w/ever). These "some" gaming communities are in the alley of team games, where you need to rely on another person to win, get an objective, beat the boss or whatever. It happens less when you play as an individual as nobody is actually relying on you. Do expect flames when your opponent is a complete douche though.
When someone new to the game suddenly rolls into your game, gets into your team, does stupid stuff, expect the "your mom" chats to fill the chatbox. "NOOB", "UNINSTALL GAME", "STOP PLAYING", "I F***** YOUR MOM" are the more common forms of insults and flames against someone who just f*cked up. It just happens, i won't wash my hands on this matter either, since I've also been at fault doing this at times. There are some games that have report systems to rectify this matter, but a report system can only do so much. I can list here ways that this could be fixed, but some people just like being dicks for one reason or another, that it's actually impossible to filter gamers.
There are more forms of discrimination in game, discrimination against noobs is just one of them. Racial discrimination is just all too common, sexual discrimination also happens as well (with well over 60% of the gaming community being of the female species [surprising i know]). Discrimination on belief, social standing, etc. Can "Magical Christmas Land" still happen, where everybody plays without your usual profanity on the chatbox, where more experienced people actually go out of the way and teach newbies, where you don't get flamed for clicking the wrong button? Only time will tell. But as long as anonymity and competition are together, don't expect it to be soon. We can wish though.
